Balance Your Chakras

Simple Techniques to Understand & Unlock Your Energy Centers at Home

a picture of the chakra symbols

The chakra system is an ancient energetic map that plays a vital role in maintaining physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellness. Originating from yogic philosophy, chakras are believed to be energy centers in the body, each responsible for different aspects of our being. When these energy centers are balanced, we experience a sense of harmony, health, and alignment. However, when they are blocked or out of balance, it can lead to emotional stress, physical symptoms, and a feeling of disconnection.

There are seven primary chakras, running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Each one governs specific physical areas, emotions, and life themes. In this blog, we’ll explore a brief overview of each chakra, offer self-assessment questions to help determine its overall balance, and share simple techniques you can use at home to bring each chakra back into harmony. Remember:

  • There's no "hierarchy" when it comes to your chakras. They are all equally important and they influence one another both directly and indirectly.

  • Nobody is "totally balanced" and there's NOTHING wrong with you just because one or more of your chakras may feel a little out of whack.

  • It is possible for you to experience the full spectrum of a chakra, meaning parts of it may feel VERY balanced, while other parts feel disconnected.

  • You are fully capable of restoring a sense of balance to any and all of your chakras with practice, purpose, and an open mind.

  • This is just a basic overview of chakras and there are countless amazing resources that will help you learn more!

Ready to get started?

1. Root Chakra (Muladhara)

Location: Base of Spine

Associated Color: Red

Element: Earth

Influence: Survival, security, grounding

The root chakra is our foundation, representing our sense of safety, stability, and connection to the Earth. Physically, it governs the legs, feet, colon, bones, and adrenal glands. Emotionally, it influences our feelings of safety, security, and belonging. When the root chakra is balanced, we feel grounded and supported. When it’s out of balance, we may feel anxious, fearful, or disconnected from our bodies.

Ask Yourself:

  • Do I feel safe & secure in my environment?

  • Am I grounded and present in my daily life?

  • Do I struggle with anxiety or feel disconnected from my body?

Your answers to these questions will help you determine the overall vitality of your Root chakra. If you determine that you could potentially benefit from some additional balance here, try this:

Balancing Technique:

Stand barefoot on the Earth (or visualize the Earth if you're indoors). Close your eyes, take deep breaths, and imagine roots extending from your feet deep into the ground. Visualize drawing energy up fro the Earth, filling your body with stability and strength.

2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)

Location: Lower abdomen

Associated Color: Orange

Element: Water

Influence: Emotions, sensuality, sexuality

The sacral chakra is the seat of our emotions, creativity, and pleasure. It governs the reproductive organs, lower back, and bladder. When balanced, we experience emotional fluidity, creativity, and the ability to embrace pleasure in life. When imbalanced, we may experience emotional instability, creative blocks, or struggle with intimacy.

Ask Yourself:

  • Do I feel connected to my emotions and express them easily?

  • Am I allowing myself to enjoy pleasure and creativity?

  • Do I have any prominent emotional blocks or fear of intimacy?

Your answers to these questions will help you determine the overall vitality of your Sacral chakra. If you determine that you could potentially benefit from some additional balance here, try this:

Balancing Technique:

Engage in a creative activity that brings you joy, whether it’s painting, dancing, or cooking. Allow yourself to flow without judgment or expectation. Moving your hips in circular motions also helps to activate and balance the sacral chakra.

3. Solar Plexus (Manipura)

Location: Solar plexus

Associated Color: Yellow

Element: Fire

Influence: Personal power, confidence, willpower

The solar plexus chakra is the center of our personal power, confidence, and self-esteem. It governs the digestive system, metabolism, and muscles. A balanced solar plexus chakra allows us to step into our personal power, set boundaries, and take action. When imbalanced, we may feel powerless, struggle with self-doubt, or experience digestive issues.

Ask Yourself:

  • Do I feel confident in my ability to take action?

  • Am I able to set healthy boundaries with others?

  • Do I struggle with self-esteem or taking control of situations?

Your answers to these questions will help you determine the overall vitality of your Solar Plexus chakra. If you determine that you could potentially benefit from some additional balance here, try this:

Balancing Technique:

Stand tall in a power pose (feet hip-width apart, hands on hips) and take a few deep breaths. As you stand in this position, repeat affirmations like "I am confident," "I am powerful," and "I can achieve my goals." This helps to activate the solar plexus and reinforce your sense of personal power.

4. Heart Chakra (Anahata)

Location: Center of chest

Associated Color: Green

Element: Air

Influence: Love, compassion, relationships

The heart chakra is the center of love, compassion, and emotional connection. Physically, it governs the heart, lungs, and circulatory system. Emotionally, it influences our ability to give and receive love, both to ourselves and others. When balanced, we feel open-hearted, compassionate, and connected to others. When imbalanced, we may feel disconnected, hold grudges, or experience a lack of self-love.

Ask Yourself:

  • Am I able to give and receive love easily?

  • Do I feel compassionate toward myself and others?

  • Do I struggle with forgiveness or holding onto past hurts?

Your answers to these questions will help you determine the overall vitality of your Heart chakra. If you determine that you could potentially benefit from some additional balance here, try this:

Balancing Technique:

Sit comfortably and place your hands over your heart. Inhale deeply, visualizing green light filling your chest, expanding with each breath. As you exhale, release any emotional pain or tension. Repeat this for several minutes to encourage openness and healing.

5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

Location: Throat

Associated Color: Blue

Element: Ether

Influence: Communication, expression, truth

The throat chakra governs communication, self-expression, and speaking our truth. It physically affects the throat, neck, and thyroid. When balanced, we can express ourselves clearly and authentically. When out of balance, we may struggle with communication, fear of speaking up, or experience ear, nose, or throat issues.

Ask Yourself:

  • Do I express myself openly and truthfully?

  • Am I able to speak up for myself in conversations?

  • Do I experience any issues with my throat or voice?

Your answers to these questions will help you determine the overall vitality of your Throat chakra. If you determine that you could potentially benefit from some additional balance here, try this:

Balancing Technique:

Sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. Begin to hum gently, allowing the vibration to resonate in your throat. Continue for several minutes, feeling the soothing vibration open your throat chakra and clear any blockages.

6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

Location: Between the eyebrows

Associated Color: Indigo

Element: Light

Influence: Intuition, wisdom, insight

The third eye chakra is the center of intuition, insight, and spiritual wisdom. It governs the eyes, brain, and nervous system. When balanced, we experience clarity, heightened intuition, and the ability to trust our inner guidance. When imbalanced, we may feel confused, lack focus, or doubt our intuition.

Ask Yourself:

  • Do I trust my intuition and inner guidance?

  • Am I able to see situations clearly and with insight?

  • Do I feel mentally clear or struggle with confusion?

Your answers to these questions will help you determine the overall vitality of your Third Eye chakra. If you determine that you could potentially benefit from some additional balance here, try this:

Balancing Technique:

Close your eyes and visualize a deep indigo light glowing between your eyebrows. As you focus on this point, allow your mind to clear. Imagine receiving guidance or clarity from within, helping you strengthen your intuitive abilities.

7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)

Location: Top of the head

Associated Color: Violet

Element: Spirit

Influence: Spiritual connection, enlightenment, unity

The crown chakra is our connection to the divine, spiritual understanding, and universal consciousness. It governs the brain, nervous system, and overall consciousness. When balanced, we feel a deep connection to the universe and a sense of oneness with all beings. When out of balance, we may feel spiritually disconnected or lack a sense of purpose.

Ask Yourself:

  • Do I feel connected to a higher purpose or spiritual understanding?

  • Am I able to trust in the Universe and its unfolding?

  • Do I experience regular feelings of isolation or disconnection?

Your answers to these questions will help you determine the overall vitality of your Crown chakra. If you determine that you could potentially benefit from some additional balance here, try this:

Balancing Technique:

Find a quiet space to meditate. Sit in stillness and focus on your breath, allowing thoughts to drift away. As you meditate, imagine a violet or white light shining down from above, entering through your crown, and filling you with peace and spiritual connection.
